NATIONAL SANGRIA DAY - is observed by enjoying a well-mixed sangria.The combinations are endless, giving sangria a place at in the cocktail rotation year round. Refreshing and light during hot summer months, bright and sparkling during the winter ones, this fruity punch is quite versatile.Sangria made with white wine is called Sangria Blanca.
- DECEMBER 20. 1951 - Experimental Breeder Reactor I (EBR-I) is a decommissioned research reactor and U.S. National Historic Landmark located in the desert about 18 miles southeast of Arco, Idaho. At 1:50 pm on December 20, 1951, it became the world's FIRST ELECTRICITYGENERATING nuclear power plant when it produced sufficient electricity to illuminate four 200- watt light bulbs. It subsequently generated sufficient electricity to power its building, and continued to be used for experimental purposes until it was decommissioned in 1964. EBR-I was deactivated in 1964 and replaced with a new reactor, EBR-II. LANDMARK status for EBR-I was granted by President Lyndon Johnson and Glenn T. Seaborg on August 25, 1966.
- DECEMBER 20. 1803 - The LOUISIANA PURCHASE was the acquisition of the Louisiana
territory by the United States from France in 1803. The U.S. paid fifty million francs and a
cancellation of debts worth eighteen million francs for a total of sixty-eight million francs
($15,000,000 USD, or around a quarter of a billion in 2016 dollars). The Louisiana territory
included land from 15 U.S. STATES and two CANADIAN PROVINCES. The territory contained
land that forms Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska; the portion of
Minnesota west of the Mississippi River; a large portion of North Dakota; a large portion of
South Dakota; the northeastern section of New Mexico; the northern portion of Texas; the area
of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado east of the Continental Divide; Louisiana west of the
Mississippi River (plus New Orleans); and small portions of land within the present Canadian
provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Its population was around 60,000 inhabitants, of whom
half were African slaves.
SANGRIA RECIPE FOR RED SANGRIA: In a pitcher, combine the red wine, brandy, Simple
Syrup and fruit. Refrigerate until the drink is chilled and the flavors are blended, 4 to 8 hours.
Serve the sangria in chilled, ice-filled wineglasses.
